I recently spoke with a teacher that teaches English to young new arrivals. Ms. Walker told that some children have NEVER worn or owned a coat or long sleeved sweater!! Average temperature in Israel is 27 to 32 degrees C. I’m sure Daniel, Lula, Mussie, Nazaret and Senay will find our environment invigorating, to say the least. REFUGEE UPDATE AND COLLECTION OF TOOLS AND SEWING BITS AND BOBS PLUS CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS etc.11/5/2022 REFUGEE UPDATE AND COLLECTION OF TOOLS AND SEWING BITS AND BOBS PLUS CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS etc.- Mohamad moved into his new apartment last weekend and is very excited to really begin his new life in Canada. He continues to work as assistant cook at the House of Chan in Milledgeville. He started English classes on Monday and is very eager to speak English with everyone.
We are collecting tools and sewing bits and bobs to make tool kits and sewing kits for the Newcomers. Enough to be able to hang a picture, tighten a table leg, sew a button on or hem some pants. If you find you have extras in your own tool/sewing box, we will gladly take them to put together some kits for the Newcomers. Also, we will be distributing donated Christmas decorations to the Newcomers we have helped over the past 6 months on November 12th. The Ukrainians, Eritreans and Filipinos are all very faithful people and are very excited about Christmas coming. If you are purging your own decorations, please bring to the ramp door between noon and 5 on Friday, November 11th. We will also find a home for any extra crucifixes and religious pictures or ornaments you might have. Thank you for your continued support and prayers for Mohamad, Daniel & Lula, and ALL refugees. JOYFUL NEWS - Monday night we greeted Mohamad at the airport as he arrived to start his new life in Canada. He has not seen his friend and sponsor in 11 years – there were definitely tears. It was bittersweet, since his family is still in Lebanon. Mohamad is trained as a cook, and his sponsor, also called Mohamad, will put him to work at the restaurant he manages as soon as he is ready. He said he wants to learn English and was very grateful to us for preparing for his arrival. He also said “we made him feel like he has family in Canada”. Doesn’t that tug at your heart strings? His sponsor has become a Canadian citizen and is very determined and I am sure he will guide Mohamad along the same path. Thank-you for your continued support and prayers for these refugees. See attached picture of Mohamad’s arrival.
This is a local Hampton group, of like minded individuals, that would like to ease the transition of Ukrainian newcomers arriving in our area. We have a representative in this group as well as from the United Church of Hampton and other churches in our area. This newly formed committee would like to hear from you. How can you help? The group is looking for clothing for both children and adults; help with meals or groceries, to mention two. Of course, there is more furniture, child care, finding employment, monetary donations, assistance learning English, etc. Perhaps you could help with renovations in a house or apartment. The attached sheet can be completed and returned to St. Alphonsus. It can either be dropped off at the office during regular office hours or dropped into the locked “mail box” on the wall to the left of the office door. It could also be returned via email. If you want to make a donation, for which you would get a tax receipt for a gift of over $10.00, it is preferred that you donate by CHEQUE or money order/bank draft. Please make payable to: Hampton United Church and on the memo line write “Helping Hands for Ukraine”. We thank you for whatever contribution you can make. <Contribution Sheet> There are many ways to help/donate.
