an update on behalf of the Hampton Helping Hands for Displaced Ukrainians Committee

Good morning,

I was asked to give an update on behalf of the Hampton Helping Hands for Displaced Ukrainians Committee.  As most know, this group which originated at the Hampton United Church now consists of members from various local faith communities and beyond...

Through generous donations from church members and others, the committee has been able to assist and support as many as 30 newcomer Ukrainian families over the past year. This has included collecting and distributing donated house wares and furniture, assisting with moving into apartments, accompanying family members to medical appointments and job interviews, providing grocery and rent support and also in assisting with local school and daycare registration for the Ukrainian children....among many other things.

The committee wants to give special thanks to Father Savoie for using his garage until last fall.  We now have secured a storage unit in Saint John but we are still using the basement at the rectory. Specials thanks also for Karen who manages to keep everything straight with helping the Ukrainian families getting settled.
The United C
hurch was encouraged to apply for and recently received a sizeable monetary donation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints which will allow Helping Hands to provide short term rent support for up to 24 eligible Ukrainian families in the greater SJ area over the next 6 months.

The committee wishes to thank all who have helped with donations, time, and vehicles for transportation or through participating or attending the fundraising concert which was held at the United Church last fall.  Our next fundraising event will be a “Coffee House” scheduled for June 16th.  We also hope to have a “yard sale” later this summer.

We are ever so grateful for your generosity and volunteering.  More helping hands are always welcomed and, I know that God's Spirit is already at work in your hearts. Cheques can be made payable to “Hampton United Church” where you can write “Helping Hands” on the memo line.  If you donate cash, please write your name and address on the envelope and note that it is for “Helping Hands” so they issue you a tax receipt.
Before closing, I would like to share this short letter from Inna whom we have helped get settled:

Again, thank you so much for everything!   Thérèse Furlong

REFUGEE UPDATE - Daniel and Lula Germazion (Aman’s brother and family), originally from the military state of Eritrea, are currently living in Israel, where they are under constant threat of deportation.  Three years ago, Aman asked us to co-sponsor them and they were very excited to get news last week that they will be arriving in Canada on January 23rd!  They have 3 children – two boys and a girl.  Mussie (10 yr old boy – size 12), Nazaret (8 yr old girl – size 10) and Senay (3yr old boy – size 6).  Aman rented an apartment for them this fall and we have it furnished and ready for them to move in. If you are able to assist in their settlement, in any way, please call Karen Bethune (506) 647-0982.
I recently spoke with a teacher that teaches English to young new arrivals.  Ms. Walker told that some children have NEVER worn or owned a coat or long sleeved sweater!! Average temperature in Israel is 27 to 32 degrees C.  I’m sure Daniel, Lula, Mussie, Nazaret and Senay will find our environment invigorating, to say the least.

    BOTTLE DRIVE
     - the parish supports our refugees through various means, one of those being an on-going bottle drive.  If you have bottles, cans, etc. you'd like to donate, you can drop them off at Hampton Recycling, located at 401 William Bell Dr. in Hampton.  Let them know the returnables are for Blessed Trinity Parish and the recycling centre will send all monies raised to our office.
